Information about healthcare in Brazil

Even though there is a lot of uncertainty in politics, the healthcare industry is expected to grow in 2017. Imports are also expected to grow.
Imports in some segments are expected to increase.
ICMS (Value Added Tax on Sales and Services) exemption is expected to continue for a few products until September 2019.


Brazil has the fourth largest medical population in the world, with 1.8 doctors per every 1,000 inhabitants. There are also more than 1.5 million nurses and technicians working in the field in Brazil.


In 2016 there were approximately 12,000 clinical laboratories and more than 22,000 diagnosis and therapy-related services in Brazil.


  • The rate of inflation is expected to be 4.5% for 2017 and 4.30% for 2018

  • Health plans: a 0.1% growth is expected for this market. That means the market is more stable compared to 2016.

  • IPCA Inflation (Consumer Price Index, Extensive): 3.46% is forecast for the end of 2017 and 4.25% for 2018 – economic indicators showed some improvement.

  • Exchange variance: there is a slightly bullish market trend at the end of 2017; rates can reach R$ 3.30. The price of US$ dollars is expected to go up to R$ 3.40 in 2018.

  • Brazil ranks ninth in health expenditures – 8.5% of GDP, which means US$ 1,109 per capita.
