Hospital opens outpatient care unit exclusively for obesity
In the southern area of the country, the Hospital of the Santa Casa de Curitiba inaugurated an outpatient care unit exclusively for the treatment of morbid obesity. The hospital is the only one in the country to offer a ward focused on the obese, featuring 13 beds and making it possible for the hospital to perform 50 bariatric surgeries per month.
The unit also provides the patients with other medical specialties necessary for this kind of treatment, such as psychiatrists and psychologists, besides medical doctors focused on cardiologic and orthopedic diseases.
In 2009, 738 bariatric surgeries were performed at the Santa Casa de Curitiba, for SUS, health insurances and privately paid surgeries. Overall, the hospital performed 7,169 surgeries.
