Maternity of a Hospital of the Unique System of Health starts using music therapy

A hospital located in Alagoas (State in the Northeastern area of Brazil) has adopted music therapy to receive women in labor. The pregnant women are received in the Hospital Nossa Senhora da Guia, from the Unique System of Health (SUS).

While awaiting delivery, the pregnant women listen to instrumental music and sounds of the nature in a comfortable environment with low light. Besides a company of her choice, the future mommy is assisted by obstetrician, physiotherapist, psychologist and social worker.

Articulated by the multidisciplinary team of the Hospital Nossa Senhora da Guia, the implementation of music therapy in the pre-delivery room integrates the process of humanization in attending the pregnant and the efforts of all the employees of the unit so that the maternity be recognized by the World Health Organization as a “Baby-friendly Hospital”.

Not only does the music therapy improve the mood of hospitalized patients but it can also facilitate medical discharge. From 100 patients surveyed, 90% felt emotionally better, which was measured by questionnaires in the beginning and by the end of the session. In 72% of the cases, the medical discharge came earlier due to the evaluation of psychologists and medical doctors.
