Investment in transplants grows 343% in eight years in Brazil

Data provided by the Ministry of Health shows that the total amount invested in the transplants sector in Brazil increased 343% between 2002 and 2009. Last year, US$ 553.3 million were invested, against US$ 159.7 million in 2002. They also reported record in number of donations and increase of 5% in the number of organ transplants last year.

According to the Ministry of Health, the increase is due to the continuous process of organization of the system, which allows, for instance, more structured States to be compensated when performing transplants in people coming from other regions.

Donors – Brazil registered in 2009 a record number of organ donors. In absolute numbers, they were 1,658, or 8.7 donors per million inhabitants (ppm). This represents a 26% growth in comparison with the previous year (7.2 ppm), when 1,317 donors were registered.

Transplants – the number of transplants performed in the country, including those of cornea and bone marrow, increased 5%. In 2008 there were 19,307 transplants and, in 2009, the number of patients receiving transplants reached 20,253.

Brazil has surpassed the number of 1 million donors of bone marrow, becoming the third largest database of the world in this field. The country is only behind the United States (5 million donors) and Germany (3 million donors).
