Hospitalar honors Adib Jatene, MD

In an atmosphere of deep emotion, the cardiologist Adib Jatene, MD, received the Hospitalar 2009 Award – Personality of the Year in Healthcare. The tribute was paid during a large dinner, which gathered more than 500 people including entrepreneurs, professionals and sector leaders. Held since 2005, the Hospitalar Award highlights personalities by their significant contribution to the advance in Medicine, to the medical and hospital service and to the quality of life of the Brazilian population.

International reference in cardiology, Adib Jatene, MD is currently one of the most renowned professionals in terms of prestige and credibility in the health sector in Brazil. Suffice it to say that the surgical teams he has led since 1962 have already carried out more than 100,000 surgeries.

Minister of Health twice, former Secretary of Health of the State of São Paulo, Professor Emeritus of the Medical School of the University of São Paulo and General Director of the Hospital do Coração (Heart Hospital of São Paulo) are only some of his qualifications.

Deeply touched, Dr. Jatene thanked for the tribute. “We live in a world that gives value to things, not people. And our profession takes care of people. We have to fight to regain these values. The medical doctor has the responsibility to recover that. Medicine is a service”, he affirmed.
